On an average year, the Northcoast Marine Mammal Center rescues between 40 and 120 stranded marine mammals per year.
With the help of our trained volunteers, we are able to rescue and transport marine mammals to the appropriate facility. California sea lions are our most common patients and have accounted for 39% of all rescues between 1988 – 2009. Pacific harbor seals are our second most commonly rescued marine mammal and have accounted for 35% of rescues, followed by Northern elephant seals (23%). Other species rescued by our facility include Northern fur seals, Steller sea lions, and Guadalupe fur seals.
